CNS Conditions - Cissampelos pareira is also used for the treatment of a number of central nervous system related conditions including convulsions, delirium, for nervous children and it is also functions as a stimulant.

Part of the plant above the ground, bark and the roots make the applicable parts of Cissampelos pareira. Abuta powder has shown to contain a number of active constituents in it. Some of these constituents include cissaine, alkaloids hayathining, hayatin and others. Alkaloids of hayatin and hayatinin are chemically similar to curare. Therefore, these compounds have relaxant effects on the muscles of body similar to tubocurarine. A classpeloflavone has been isolated from abuta. This compound has shown to possess significant antiprotozol activity in laboratory investigations.

Cissampelos pareira should not be confused with Abuta grandfolia. Abuta grandfolia, like Cissampelos pareira, is also referred to as abuta and is a South American plant used for making arrow poison due to its high curare content.
