How Apple Pectin Works?

Malus Pumila a fiber (polysaccharide) found in fruits. It is a starch that is impervious to the activity of amylase. It is found in the cell walls of plant tissue and helps give rigidity to plants. Pectin is metabolized by intestinal bacteria to simpler forms in the colon. Pectin may relieve diarrhea by enhancing the retention of water and salt. It might also act as an energy source, improve oxygen use and increase protein synthesis by the colonic mucosa. Apple pectin powder may also slow gut motility and enhance the gastrointestinal transit time. Pectin may lessen the measure of stomach constituent refluxed into the throat. Like alginic acid (Gaviscon), it glides on top of the stomach constituent and may serve as a boundary between the throat and stomach acid. Pectin does not influence the pH in the stomach. It may be effective for curing gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)l however more clinical examination is required before pectin can be suggested for this purpose. There is interest for utilizing pectin to lessen heavy metal toxicity. Pectin appears to bind heavy metals in the GI tract and encourage their fecal disposal. Oral consumption of pectin appears to lessen the lead and strontium levels in the body. Taking a particular low-molecular weight modified citrus pectin (EcoNugenics, Pectasol) appears to enhance the urinary discharge of cadmium, arsenic and lead in healthy people with a typical load of heavy metals. It is also estimated that this urinary discharge is enhanced because of ingestion of the modified citrus pectin and then chelation of the metals in subsequent urinary elimination. There is also interest for utilizing the modified citrus pectin (EcoNugenics, Pectasol) for different types of cancer. In animal models, modified apple pectin powder seemed to reduce the potential risks of colon and breast cancer. It, furthermore, diminishes the metastasis of cancer of colon, breast and prostate. It is speculated that adjusted use of apple pectin powder may block tumor cell attachment to galectin-3 receptors and subsequent metastasis.
