Oral preparations of Agathosma betulina (Buchu) like buchu powder and buchu tea are used for urethritis, as a urinary tract disinfectant in cystitis, venereal diseases, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, kidney infections and for acute cystitis. On manufacturing scale, buchu oil is utilized for fruit flavoring different foods.

Possibly Safe - The leaves of buchu are likely safe when they are used in an amount present in most of the food items. Agathosma betulina has been given a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status in the United States for use in food items. Possibly Unsafe - It is likely unsafe to use when excessive quantity of buchu dried leaves are taken orally or when its oil is ingested. Pulegone, a potentially hazardous substance, is considered an important component of Buchu. Possibly Unsafe in Pregnancy and Lactation - In pregnancy, buchu is considered unsafe when used as a drug. In lactation, Agathosma betulina is quite unsafe when used in food items. So, it is advised to such ladies to avoid using buchu leaves or buchu powder because there is lack of adequate information to rate the safety of buchu and its related products during breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Antiplatelet /Anticoagulant Supplements & Herbs - The risk of bleeding may increase theoretically after concomitant use of buchu powder and antiplatelet/anticoagulant herbs and supplements. Some antiplatelet/anticoagulant herbs include Panax ginseng, angelica, ginkgo, clove, ginger, danshen and garlic.

How Buchu Interacts With Drugs?

Antiplatelet / Anticoagulant Drugs - The risk of bleeding may increase theoretically after concomitant use of buchu powder and antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs. This interaction is of moderate nature so caution should be observed. Lithium - You’ve advised to observe caution while consuming this mixture as it may elicit side effects of moderate nature. This mixture may likely increase diuretic effects. Due to its possible diuretic effects, buchu powder may increase lithium levels in the body and lessen its excretion. In such scenario, lithium dosage should be decreased.

How Buchu Interacts With Diseases and Conditions?

Kidney infection - Use of Agathosma betulina is contraindicated in individuals with kidney infections. Urinary Tract Infection - Use of buchu powder is contraindicated in individuals suffering from urinary tract infections. Surgery - Antiplatelet side effects are reported due to the use of Buchu. Excess bleeding has been reported in some cases where patients took buchu powder before surgery. So, such patients are advised that they stop using Agathosma betulina two weeks prior to surgical procedures.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Buchu?

You can use it by making a tea from buchu powder or leaves. For that, steep 1 gram of dried Agathosma betulina (buchu) leaves in 150 ml for as much as 5-10 minutes and strain the liquid afterwards. Use this tea several times a day.

Comments

Buchu is potentially hepatotoxic. Therefore, liver functions should be closely monitored in individuals consuming buchu tea or buchu powder.
