Herbs contain cardiac glycosides should be used with caution because concomitant use of these herbs and Juglans cinerea can lead to serious consequences. Herbs with cardiac glycosides include Canadian hemp roots, black hellebore, hedge mustard, digitalis leaf, valley roots lily, figwort, oleander leaf, motherwort, pleurisy root, pheasant's eye plant, seeds of strophanthus and squill bulb leaves scales. By taking licorice along with butternut powder may enhance the potassium depletion risk (Hypokalemia) in human body. By taking stimulant laxative herbs along with butternut powder may enhance the potassium depletion risk in human body. Stimulant laxative herbs that should be used with caution along with Juglans cinerea include alder buckthorn, blue flag, butternut bark, fo ti, yellow dock, European buckthorn, gossypol, gamboge, aloe, jalap, greater bindweed, black root, Mexican scammony root, manna, colocynth, senna and rhubarb.

Interaction rating of corticosteroids and butternut powder is moderate so be careful of this combination. Over dosage of butternut may increase the corticosteroid induced loss of potassium from the body. Interaction rating of digoxin and Juglans cinerea is moderate so observe caution while using combination. Over dosage of butternut powder may cause increase in the potential side effects of cardiac glycoside drugs- digoxin is one such drug. Interaction rating of diuretic drugs and butternut powder is moderate so be careful while consuming this combination. Over dosage of butternut may cause exacerbation of diuretic-induced potassium loss from the body. There is an issue that individuals utilizing butternut powder in combination with potassium-depleting diuretics may have increased risk of hypokalemia. For such patients it is important to increase dosage of potassium supplement- if they are already taking such supplements- or to start taking potassium supplementation- if they are not taking such supplements before. Potassium sparing diuretics can also be used that include chlorthalidone (Thalitone), chlorothiazide (Diuril), hydrochlorothiazide (Microzidem, Hydrodiuril and HCTZ), furosemide (Lasix) and other diuretics. Using butternut along with some other drugs via oral route may accelerate the transit time of these drugs from the gut with consequent decreased absorption. Interaction rating of butternut and stimulant laxatives is moderate so be careful of this mixture. Concomitant use may cause electrolyte loss and compound fluids. Interaction rating of butternut and warfarin is moderate so be careful of this mixture. Juglans cinerea possesses stimulant laxative impacts.
