Scientific Name

Evodia Rutaecarpa

Why Do People Use Evodia?

Orally - The oral preparations of Evodia rutaecarpa (Evodia), like evodia powder, are used for a number of purposes, some of them are nausea, diarrhea issues, abdominal pain, for vomiting complaints, lack of appetite, hypertension, headache and congestive heart failure (CHF). Evodia powder may also be useful in the treatment of amenorrhea, for contraception, viral infections, postpartum hemorrhage, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease (PUD), obesity, Helicobacter pylori infection, dysentery, Alzheimer's disease, as a diuretic and also for cancer treatment. Evodia root bark is utilized for the treatment of parasitic infections like pinworm and tapeworm infections.

Is It Safe To Use?

The data available in this regard is still inconclusive and safety of Evodia rutaecarpa is still questionable. Likely Unsafe in Pregnancy - Oral consumption of evodia powder in pregnancy in considered unsafe. In animal models, the administration of evodia powder was related with increase in uterine contractility. Evodia has also shown to lessen litter size in animals. So pregnant females should avoid its use. In Lactation - No information available; avoid using.

How Effective Is Evodia?

No data available.

How Evodia Works?

The most effective parts of Evodia rutaecarpa are the root bark and its fruit. Several constituents have been separated from fruit of evodia. These include dehydroevodiamine, quinazoline alkaloids rutaecarpine, hydroxyevodiamine wuchuyine, evodiamine and rutaevine. Hydroxyevodiamine and Dehydroevodiamine. Alkaloids of quinolone have also been separated from methanol concentrate of evodia fruit. These included dihydroevocarpine, evocarpine and other alkaloids. Other constituents separated from Evodia rutaecarpa include evogin, limonin, evodinone, evodol, and synephrine. Evodia’s crude extract appears to increase blood pressure and is responsible for tachycardia in animal models. The quinolone alkaloids of evodia restrict the activity of Helicobacter pylori in vitro. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of these constituents against H. pylori is like that of the clarithromycin and amoxicillin. Alkaloids of quinolone present in evodia fruit may have anti-inflammatory impacts. These constituents repress leukotriene synthesis. The quinolone alkaloids in evodia fruit repress nuclear factor release from activated T cells. Acetone extract of evodia fruits contains constituents like evodiamine. Evodiamine activates vanilloid receptors, which may be useful in a number of pharmacological processes. Evodiamine has intense cardiotonic effects, which maybe the result of vanilloid receptors activation. Extract of evodia fruits containing evodiamine has significant chronotropic and positive inotropic effects in animal heart tissue. Evodiamine seems to have vasodilatory impacts as well. Extract of evodia fruit also slows down gastrointestinal transit and has also shown antidiarrheal properties in animal models. Limonin and Evodiamine constituents of evodia powder may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in animal models. Evodiamine seems to desensitize sensory neurons likely because of its activation of vanilloid receptors. Evodia powder may be useful for Alzheimer's disease and different dementias. Extract of evodia has acetylcholinesterase effects in vitro, which seems to be due to the dehydroevodiamine constituent. In animal models, extract of evodia seems to lessen induced memory suppression. Use of evodia powder may be useful in the treatment of obesity because of its ability to induce thermogenesis. The results of studies on animal models have suggested the evodia is useful in decreasing body fat concentration and also helps in suppressing appetite. The rutaecarpine constituent seems to have antiplatelet potential, as demonstrated in animal models and in vitro studies. It is considered that rutaecarpine represses phospholipase C, which ultimately leads to suppression of platelet aggregation. Rutaecarpine seems to have anti-inflammatory effects as well. This is perhaps due to its ability to inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase enzyme. It may also be useful in myocardial diseases and gastric injury. Rutaecarpine activates vanilloid receptors to increase the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). CGRP is believed to help against myocardial and gastric injury. In animal models, rutaecarpine diminished gastric injury caused by aspirin. In animal models, rutaecarpine seems to prompt the action of cytochrome enzyme. In vitro, extract of evodia and other constituents of evodia powder like limonin and rutaecarpine hinder the activity of hepatic cytochromes. Evodia extract has uterine stimulant activity, as demonstrated by in animal models and in vitro studies. These impacts may be due to dehydroevodiamine and rutaecarpine. Evodia powder may also be useful in the treatment of cancer. Evodia decreases cancer cell division, induces their apoptosis and decreases their metastasis

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Evodia?

No side effects have been reported with the use of evodia powder.

How Evodia Interacts With Other Herbs and Supplements?

Supplement and Herb with Antiplatelet / Anticoagulant Activity - Evodia rutaecarpa has shown to have antiplatelet activity in animals and experimental models. Using a combination of evodia powder and antiplatelet/anticoagulant herbs and supplements may enhance the potential risk of bleeding and bruising. Such herbs include danshen, angelica, garlic, Panax ginseng, ginger, clove, ginkgo, and other herbs as well.

How Evodia Interacts With Drugs?

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs - Interaction rating between evodia powder and drugs with antiplatelet and anticoagulant potential is moderate so be careful of this combination. Evodia constituents have shown to have antiplatelet effects in vitro and in animal models. Concomitant use of evodia powder with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may enhance the potential risks of bleeding or bruising. Few of these drugs include clopidogrel (Plavix), aspirin, enoxaparin, dalteparin, indomethacin (Indocin), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), ticlopidine (Ticlid) and other drugs as well. Caffeine - Interaction rating between caffeine and evodia powder is moderate so be careful about this combination. In animal models, concomitant administration of extract of evodia reduces level of caffeine up to 71%. This is perhaps due to the ability of Evodia rutaecarpa to induce hepatic enzymes. Evodia powder may show some side effects when used with following drugs: • Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inhibitors • Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) substrates • Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrates • Theophylline

How Evodia Interacts With Lab Tests?

There is no known interaction found between Evodia rutaecarpa and different lab test.

How Evodia Interacts With Diseases and Conditions?

Surgery- Extract of evodia may have antiplatelet impacts on human body. If it is utilized preoperatively, it may cause adverse reactions like increased bleeding during or after surgery. So, such patient who are going through some surgical procedures are advised to stop using evodia at least two weeks before their surgery.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Evodia?
