Why Do People Use Honeysuckle?
The oral preparations of Lonicera caprifolia (Honeysuckle), like honeysuckle powder, are used for enteritis, digestive disorders, dysentery issues, diabetes, pneumonia, swine flu, fever, to promote sweating, headache, malignant tumors and rheumatoid arthritis. The oral consumption of honeysuckle maybe useful when used as a laxative, for influenza, upper respiratory tract infections and for colds, encephalitis, urinary disorders, swelling, inflammation, sores and boils, to cure bacterial and viral infections, as a contraceptive and as a poisoning antidote.
Lonicera caprifolia can be used topically for itching, inflammation, as an antimicrobial and astringent.
Is It Safe To Use?
About the safety of honeysuckle there is scanty reliable information available. However, the intravenous use of honeysuckle and two other herbs is considered safe to use for infants up to seven days. However, more confirmation is required to rate the safety of honeysuckle.

Bronchiolitis - Initial research recommends that by combining honeysuckle plus forsythia and baikal skullcap given intravenously may lessen bronchiolitis symptoms in infants having infection of respiratory syncytial virus. However, more confirmations are required to rate effectiveness of honeysuckle for this purpose.
How Honeysuckle Works?
The most effective part of Lonicera caprifolia are its seeds, leaves and flowers. Honeysuckle consist of saponins, phenolics, some essential oils, flavones, terpenoids and other compounds. The honeysuckle flavonoids, restrains tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-8 generation in intestinal cells, proposing it may be effective for intestinal inflammatory dysfunction. Honeysuckle aqueous extract also appears to have anti-inflammatory impacts in animal model of inflammation. The loniceroside saponins relates to honeysuckle powder seem to have anti-inflammatory effects. Few of these herbs include angelica, garlic, clove, danshen, Panax ginseng, ginger, ginkgo etc.
How Honeysuckle Interacts With Drugs?
Antiplatelet or Anticoagulant Drugs - Interaction rating between honeysuckle powder and antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs is moderate, so be careful about this combination. Using this type of mixture may lead to increase in the potential bleeding risks because of decrease in the rate of platelet aggregation. Experiments show that honeysuckle powder may cause decrease in blood platelet aggregation. So, concomitant use of such products should be avoided. Drugs having such properties include clopidogrel (Plavix), aspirin, enoxaparin (Lovenox), warfarin (Coumadin), dalteparin (Fragmin), ticlopidine (Ticlid), heparin and some others.
