How Horsetail Works?

The most effective parts of Equisetum arvense are the aerial parts. Flavonoids present in horsetail include, luteolin, apigenin quercetin and kaempferol compounds; petrosins compounds; xaffeic acid derivatives; saponins; onitin; tannins and sterols. There is also significant quantity of silicon and nicotine in horsetail. Initial studies suggest that hydroalcoholic and liquid extracts of horsetail have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant impacts. Vaso-relaxant and analgesic properties have been reported following the use of aqueous extracts of horsetail. Other studies also tells that horsetail extracts may have anticonvulsant and sedative effects. Petrosin and flavonoid constituents might have hepatoprotective properties. Other clinical experiments demonstrate that horsetail extract may have antiviral impacts in human being. Raw form of horsetail consists of thiaminase, which is an enzyme that demolishes thiamine (also called vitamin B1). Other concerned horsetail (Equisetum) species have hypoglycemic and diuretic activities. If horsetail also has these effects is unclear.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Horsetail?

Orally - Raw form of horsetail may result in lack of thiamine with extended utilization. Canadian products are mandatory to be authenticated as free from thiaminase impacts. Horsetail has also been linked to have cross allergenicity with carrots. This plant may contain small quantity of nicotine and may cause nicotine toxicity, especially when taken in large amounts. Topically - When Equisetum arvense is applied to the skin, it may cause of seborrheic dermatitis.

How Horsetail Interacts With Other Herbs and Supplements?

Areca - Combination of areca and horsetail powder may increase the potential risks of thiamine deficiency. Areca (betel) nuts may also decrease the thiamine activity likely due to its chemical inactivation. Thiaminase is the active constituent of horsetail, which disturbs thiamine. Herbs & Supplements Containing Chromium - Horsetail powder contains chromium (in a percentage of 0.0006) and could enhance the risk of chromium toxicity when utilized with the combination of chromium-containing herbs or chromium supplements for example cascara, brewer's yeast or bilberry. Thiamine - Raw horsetail consist of thiaminase, which damages the thiamine. Chronic ingestion in animals has been related with deficiency of thiamine.

How Horsetail Interacts With Drugs?

Lithium - Interaction rating between lithium and Equisetum arvense is moderate, so be careful about this mixture. Horsetail powder may have diuretic effects. So because of these potential diuretic effects, this plant may decrease the excretion level and increase the serum levels of lithium. In this scenario lithium dosage needs to be decreased.

Till further confirmations are available, diabetic patients should be careful about the dosage of horsetail powder. Hypokalemia - Different types of horsetail have different diuretic effects, which may enhance the excretion level of potassium. Till further confirmations are available, patients suffering from potassium deficiency should be cautious about the dosage of horsetail. Thiamine Deficiency - Oral usage of Equisetum arvense may exacerbate thiamine deficiency.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Horsetail?

No typical dosage is available.

Comments

Adulteration with Equisetum palustre that has the toxic alkaloid palustrine has happened. Palustrine can be more lethal in cattle but its toxicity is not so severe in humans.
