Why Do People Use Liverwort?

The oral preparations of Hepatica nobilis (liverwort), like liverwort powder, can be used for liver diseases, liver enlargement, jaundice, portal vein problems, congestion, liver cirrhosis and hepatitis. Liverwort is also used for digestive and gastric discomfort, relieving sensation of fullness, stimulating appetite, for regulating bowel function, for treating gallstones, regulating blood lipid levels, stimulating pancreatic function, stimulating systemic and cardiac circulation, for varicose veins, strengthening nerves, increasing myocardium blood supply, stimulating metabolism, for purifying blood, as a sedative or general tonic and relief of menopausal symptoms. How Liverwort Works?

The most effective parts of liverwort are the dried or fresh above ground parts. This Plant contains an active constituent ranunculin (18), which hydrolyzes to unstable and toxic protoanemonin that readily dimerizes to nontoxic anemonin. There are some confirmations that suggest that anemonin may have cytotoxic properties. Some other studies also suggest that protoanemonin and anemonin may have antipyretic and sedative effects. Protoanemonin has antimicrobial effects in some individuals. It is responsible for the stimulation of central nervous system and paralysis in animals. Urinary and kidney tract irritation may be because of the alkylating activity of protoanemonin.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Liverwort?

Orally - There are some adverse effects reported due to fresh liverwort powder such as diarrhea, colic, kidney, gastrointestinal irritation and urinary tract irritation. Topically - By applying fresh liverwort on skin can cause itching, mucous membrane irritation, irritation, pustule formation known a ranunculus dermatitis. By Inhalation - Volatile oil containing Protoanemonin may lead to conjunctival and nasal mucosal irritation in some cases.
