How Lobelia Works?

The most effective part of Lobelia inflata are the aerial parts. It has respiratory stimulant, antispasmodic, expectorant, emetic and anti-asthmatic effects. The primary constituent of lobelia is lobeline, which is also known as alpha lobeline to differentiate it from the mixture of lobelia alkaloids in earlier times known as lobeline. Alpha lobeline is a partial nicotine agonist with effects on the neuromuscular system, peripheral circulation and central nervous system (CNS). Lobeline’s low dosage has expectorant activity and stimulates respiration. Lobelia inflate, when used in a large amounts, has diuretic, purgative and emetic effects. Lobeline causes CNS stimulation then respiratory and CNS depression.

Oral consumption of lobelia powder can lead to vomiting, nausea, coughing, diarrhea, tremors, dizziness and irritation in throat. Excessive dosage of lobelia may also cause tachycardia, sweating, hypothermia, convulsions, coma, hypotension and even causes death.

Lithium - Interaction rating between lithium and lobelia is moderate, so be careful about this mixture. Lobelia is thought to have diuretic effects. Clinical studies were unable to show lobeline efficacy greater than placebo in smoking cessation and it was disallowed as an ingredient in anti-smoking products in the United States in 1993.
