Why Do People Use Mullein?

The oral preparations of Verbascum Thapsus (Mullein), like mullein powder, are used for respiratory tract infections, mucous membrane inflammation, whooping cough, cough, bronchitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, hoarseness, colds, earaches, flu, chills, fever, tracheitis, swine flu, tonsillitis and allergies. Mullein is also used for diarrhea, asthma disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, colic, migraines problems, and gout, narcotic, use as a sedative, antirheumatic and as a diuretic. Its root is utilized for croup. Topically - Mullein is also applied to the skin for burns, wounds, bruises, inflamed mucosa, hemorrhoids, erysipelas and frostbite. Whereas, its leaves are utilized topically to protect the skin. In manufacturing - Mullein powder is used commercially as a flavoring agent in alcoholic beverages.

To rate the safety of mullein, there is scarce information available. Avoid in Both Pregnancy and Lactation - Mullein should be avoided in both conditions because there is scarce information available about its safety in these conditions.

How Mullein Works?

The most effective parts of Verbascum Thapsus are flower, root and its leaves. There are some active constituents in mullein such as harpagide, harpagoside, hesperidin, volatile oils, aucubin, saponins and verbascoside. Preliminary research suggests that a flower extract may have activity against influenza and herpes simplex viruses. There are some clinical experiments that suggest that a leave extract may have activity against herpes simplex virus type 1. Extract of leaves may also have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus. It may also have antitumor activities. Oral ingestion may have toxic side effects.
