How Nutmeg Works?

Myristica fragrans contains volatile oil with constituent such as elemicin, myristicin, isoeugenol, eugenol, safrole, pinese, gerinol, borneol and cineole. These constituents have different type of individual pharmacological impacts and some of which may antagonize others. The volatile oil borneol is thought to be in charge of CNS stimulant impacts, while a few others, for example, isoeugenol, methyleugenol, myristicin, safrole, geranyl acetic acid derivation, 1,8-cineole and 1,8-p-methadiene appear to have narcotic impacts. 1, 8-cineole and Alpha- and beta-pinene appear to have convulsant activity, while methyleugenol, eugenol and safrole have anticonvulsant effects. Nutmeg also has psychoactive impacts and can develop illusion, fantasies, fancies and rapture. The constituents elemicin and myristicin are thought to be metabolized to amphetamine-related mixes, however this has not yet been confirmed. Elemicin and Myristicin may also have consequences for serotonergic system and potentially have an antidepressant effect. Other constituents have anesthetic activity such as methyleugenol, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, safrole, and methylisoeugenol. Antihistaminic effects have been found with methylisoeugenol and elemicin. High amount of nutmeg can also lead to anticholinergic side effects, but the constituents alpha-terpinene and 1, 8-cineole are reported to have anticholinesterase effects. Mace and Nutmeg powder and their oils have different impacts including antioxidant, antispasmodic, larvicidal, emetic, hypotensive, antifungal and antibacterial effects. Calcium antagonist activity has been accounted for safrole, eugenol and myristicin. Eugenol, myristicin and isoeugenol repress prostaglandin activity and may have inflammatory characteristics. Safrole in nutmeg oil advances liver carcinomas in mice. Animal studies recommend that myristicin inhibits tumor formation and also acts as an inducer of cytochrome P-450 enzyme systems.
