How Milkwort Works?

The most effective part of Polygala senega is the root. Its roots consist of methyl salicylate, salicylic acid and a saponin mixture, known as senegin. It is believed that Milkwort has emetic, expectorant and saliva and sweat stimulating activiy. The significant expectorant chemical in milkwort powder is triterpenoid saponins. According to clinical studies, saponins may cause reflex secretion of mucous in the bronchioles and irritate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract mucosa. A French human study confirmed that triterpenic acid extract has anti-inflammatory effects and is beneficial against eczema, graft rejection, multiple sclerosis and psoriasis.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Milkwort?

ORAL Normal dosage of Milkwort is one cup of tea or 0.5 to 1 grams dried root three every day. To make such tea, steep one gram of dried root in 150 mL boiling water for 5to 10 minutes and then strain the fluid. TOPICAL No typical dosage.
