Why Do People Use Verbena?

Oral preparations of Verbena officinalis (Verbena), like verbena powder, are used for the treatment of sore throats plus other pharyngeal and oral inflammation, respiratory tract diseases for example whooping cough and asthma and angina. Other oral uses of verbena powder include for melancholia, depression, generalized seizure, hysteria, fever, gallbladder pain and convalescence after fevers, as pain killer, exhaustion, spasms, nervous conditions, angina, liver and gallbladder diseases, digestive disorders, kidney and lower urinary tract disorders and jaundice. Some other uses include irregular menstruation, menopausal complaints, arthritic conditions, increasing lactation, for metabolic disorders, gout, edema associated with weak heart and to cure anemia. Topically - Verbena powder is used topically for abscesses and burns, poorly healing wounds, for oral/pharyngeal cavity diseases and as a gargle for cold symptoms, rheumatism, arthritis, contusions, dislocations, minor burns and itching. Mixture of gentian root and verbena along elder flower, European elder flower, sorrel and cowslip flower is utilized for treating sinusitis and for maintaining healthy sinuses. In manufacturing - Verbena flowers are used as a flavoring agent in various alcoholic beverages.

Likely Safe - Orally used verbena in considered safe in amounts commonly found in food items. Verbena has been given Generally Recognized As Safe status (GRAS) in the United States. However, combination of verbena with elderflower, gentian root, sorrel (SinuComp, Sinupret) and cowslip flower is also considered safe when consumed orally by healthy individuals. To rate the topical safety of Verbena officinalis, there is scarce and unreliable information available. Avoid During Pregnancy and Lactation - About the safety of verbena while breastfeeding and pregnancy there is also very limited information available, so don’t use it without recommendation of your physician.

How Verbena Works?

The most effective parts of Verbena officinalis are the aerial parts. This herb consists of verbenalin, verbascoside (acetoside), ursolic acid, beta-sitosterol, citral, oleanolic acid and other constituents. Initial experiments suggest that verbena powder may have weak antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Some other clinical researches recommend that constituent verbascoside in verbena has sedative, analgesic, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects as well. Whereas, its constituent, citral, appears to have antitumor effects.
