According to various reports the genus name Portulaca is derived from the word laca meaning ‘milk carrier’ and Latin porto in reference to its milky sap. The oleracea species is Latin word which means potherb. It is a local herb of India and Persia which was introduced into Europe by Arabs in the 15th century as a salad. According to historians, it is reported that this herb was one of the most favorite food herb of Mahatma Gandhi.
