How Black Cherry Works?

The most effective part of Prunus serotina is the stem bark. Black Cherry bark has sedative, antitussive and astringent effects. It consist of prunasin constituent which is a cyanogenic glycoside that is hydrolyzed to toxic benzaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid (HCN). Accumulated bark in the fall has a greater HCN yield (about 0.15%) than bark collected in the spring (approximately 0.05%). Leaves collected in the spring have the highest HCN yield (approximately 0.25%).

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) Substrates - Interaction rating between Black Cherry powder and specific cytochrome substrates is moderate, so be careful about using this combination. Initial experiments suggests that Black Cherry can inhibit CYP3A4 enzyme. Black Cherry may enhance the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. But, this interaction has not been observed in human beings. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 are ketoconazole (Nizoral), lovastatin (Mevacor), triazolam (Halcion), fexofenadine (Allegra), itraconazole (Sporanox) and various others as well. Therefore, individuals taking these medicines should use black cherry after the recommendation of their physician.

Comments

Don’t mix cherry laurel water with Black Cherry. There are number of Chinese medicines where the bark and stem of related species (Prunus armeniaca) may be effective as an antidote for apricot kernel poisoning.
