Arnica (Arnica montana)

Medicinal Parts: The medicinal parts of Arnica at the ethereal oil of the flowers, the dried flowers, the leaves collected before the flowering and dried, the roots and the dried rhizome and roots.

Medicinal Properties: anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, diuretic, immune stimulant, nerve stimulant, rubefacient, vulnerary.
Internal Uses: angina, arteriosclerosis, catarrh, concussion, fever, gout, inflammation, post-traumatic stress, postsurgical trauma, stroke
Internal Applications: homeopathic remedy
Topical Uses: bruises, chilblains, foot soreness, laryngitis, phlebitis, rheumatism, sore throat, sprains, varicose veins
Topical Applications: Use as a compress, liniment, salve or oil for bruises, chilblains, plebitis, rheumatic pain, sprains and varicose veins. Gargle for laryngitis and sore throat. Footbath for sore feet.
Chemical Constituents: Essential oil (thymol), sesquiterpene lactones (arnicin, arnicolides, helenalin), flavonoids (eupafolin, pattuletin), polysaccharides, mucilage, bitters, carotenoids, inulin, tannin.
Contraindications: Use internally with caution as it can cause irritation to the kidneys and digestive tract. Can cause dizziness and trembling. It is best used homeopathically or topically. When using topically, only use on unbroken skin; it can cause skin irritation, as can repeated applications. The risk connected with the external, appropriate adiministration of therapeutic dosages of the drug are minimal.
Characteristics: sweet, neutral
Habitat: Arnica is found in Europe from Scandinavia to southern Europe. It is also found in Southern Russia and centeral Asia. Arnica flower consists of the fresh or dried inflorescence of Arnica montana or Arnica chamissonis. The flower should be dried quicly at 45 degrees to 50 degrees celcus.

Comments: Arnica preperations have an antiphlogistic, analgesic and antiseptic effect when applied topically, due to the sesquiterpene lactone componant. The flavonoid bonds, essential oils, and polyynes may also be involved. In cases of inflammation, Arnica preparations also show analgesic and antiseptic activity.
