Habitat: Pau D’arco is a large flowering tree that produces a large purple flower and is most common across the landscape of South American cities. Pau D’arco has been longed used as a herbal medicine around the world considered to be an astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and laxative used in the treatment of ulcers, syphilis, gastrointestinal problems, candidiasis, cancer, diabetes, prostatitis, constipation, and allergies.

Comments: In North America medicine pau d’arco is considered for treatment of analgesic, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and laxative, as well as to have anticancerous properties. It is used externally and internally for fevers, infections, colds, flu, syphilis, cancer, respiratory problems, skin ulcerations, boils, dysentery, gastrointestinal problems of all kinds, arthritis, prostatitis, and circulation disturbances. Pau D'arco helps lower blood sugar levels and acts as a mild laxative. It is used for lung, prostate and colon cancer and also believed to increase red blood cell production. It appears that lapachol, a crystaline yellow pigment, inhibits tumor cell growth by preventing tumors from metabolizing oxygen. The chemical also exhibits antibaterial activity and shows effectiveness against gram positive and Brucella bacteria. The chemical constituents and active ingredients in pau d’arco have been well documented over the years it has been reported to cures with a variety of cancers due to anticancerous properties which attributed to the phytochemical found in the bark and wood called lapachol. Lapachol has demonstrated to be highly active against cancerous tumors in rats in early studies. In the phytochemical database at the U.S department of agriculture lapachol is documented as being antiabscess, anticarcinomic, antiedemic, anti-flammatory, antimalarial, antiseptic, antitumor, antiviral, bactericide, fungicide, insectifuge, pesticide, protisticide, respiradepressant, schistosomicide, termiticide, and viricide. Pau D’arco contains at least 20 other constituents that attribute to its other actions. It is clearly demonstrated broad clinical applications against a large number of disease causing microorganisms, which helps explain its array of uses in herbal medicine.
