Why Do People Use Ayahuasca?
Banisteriopsis caapi is turned into a powerful traditional South American psychedelic brew. This brew is made by mixing the vine of Banisteriopsis caapi and P.ciridis (with or without DMT- rich plants). Following are the basic uses of ayahuasca powder or Banisteriopsis caapi powder:
Ayahuasca powder is most commonly used as an emetic agent i.e. it is used to induce vomiting. Ayahuasca is a term that is sometimes closely linked with a combination of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) and N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). It is used as a hallucinogen.
Is It Safe To Use?
Ayahuasca powder or Banisteriopsis caapi powder is rich in monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) compounds. Due to its richness in MAOIs, these powders have a tendency to increase blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attack.
Banisteriopsis caapi has the tendeny to interact with dairy products when it is used as a dieting agent.
Due to these significant interactions of ayahuasca, you should always consult with your doctor before using ayahuasca powder or banisteriopsis caapi powder.
How Effective Is Ayahuasca?
Research has shown the effectiveness of ayahuasca powder for following conditions:
Banisteriopsis caapi has the ability to act as a psychedelic. Use of this powder has the ability to interfere with the functioning of brain. It can alter cognition, perception and decision making abilities.
Research has also shown the effectiveness of ayahuasca powder as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Due to this effect, use of ayahuasca can increase the amount of monoamines (like dopamine, serotonin etc.) in the brain.
How Ayahuasca Works?
Ayahuasca powder basically functions as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Monoamines are the brain neurotransmitters like histamine, dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine, serotonin etc. In normal concentration, these brain neurotransmitters perform vital brain functions like proper cognition, transmission of nerve impulses, alertness etc. However, in excess these neurotransmitters can cause adverse effects like decreased cognition, perception and inability to focus and think properly. In order to save this from happening, monoamine oxidases acquire a pivotal role. Monoamine oxidases are enzymes in the brain that are meant to degrade the monoamines at periodic intervals. This prevents the buildup of these amines.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are the drugs that can inhibit the function of monoamine oxidase enzyme. This would inevitably result in an increase in the concentration of these amines. Research has shown that Banisteriopsis caapi powder can function as MAOI. Use of this herb, therefore, can result in impaired cognition and thinking capacity of brain.
What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Ayahuasca?
The adverse reactions associated with ayahuasca powder are mostly linked with its ability to inhibit the degradation of different amines. The oral intake of Banisteriopsis caapi powder can inhibit the action of monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme. If the function of MAO-A is inhibited; it would result in an increase in the concentration of amines like norepinephrine and serotonin. This effect of ayahuasca is greatly exaggerated with the consumption of certain foods. For instance, the consumption of tyramine containing food (like cheese) can greatly increase the concentration of norepinephrine and result can be hypertensive crisis. This is called cheese syndrome. Similarly, consuming a diet rich in tryptophan can greatly increase the concentration of serotonin in the brain and result can be hyperserotonemia.
The amount of ayahuasca powder or banisteriopsis caapi powder required to create these adverse reactions greatly vary among different individuals. Moreover, the drug parameters like the dose and selectivity of drug for the targeted enzyme dictate the degree of inhibition ayahuasca would cause for the enzyme.
The exact mechanism by which the consumption of food rich in tyramine results in hypertensive crisis is unknown. But it is believed that rise in the level of tyramine can displace epinephrine from its storage vesicles in the terminal parts of brain neurons. This would result in an increase in the concentration of norepinephrine in the brain. Norepinephrine is a mediator that can accelerate the heart and constrict blood vessels. Excess of norepinephrine, caused by banisteriopsis caapi powder, can therefore cause hypertensive crisis. Another theory suggests that other factors like accumulation and proliferation of catecholamines is responsible for causing hypertensive crisis.
How Ayahuasca Interacts With Other Herbs and Supplements?
There is no known interaction of ayahuasca powder with different herbs and supplements. More studies should be conducted in this regard.
How Ayahuasca Interacts With Drugs?
Little is known about the interaction of banisteriopsis caapi powder with different drugs. More research is needed in this area.
How Ayahuasca Interacts With Foods?
Ayahuasca powder contains substances that resemble MAOI. It means that banisteriopsis caapi powder can cause serious complications when used in conjunction with certain foods and psychotics, which are quite safe when used alone.
How Ayahuasca Interacts With Lab Tests?
There is no known interaction of ayahuasca powder with different lab results. More research might unveil more details.
How Ayahuasca Interacts With Diseases and Conditions?
No disease or condition is found to produce a significant interaction with banisteriopsis caapi powder.
What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Ayahuasca?
The dose of ayahuasca powder on its own depends on a number of variables like the quality, the variety, the purpose of taking ayahuasca and sensitivity of drinker to its constituents. The usual oral dose of banisteriopsis caapi powder is 25 to 150 grams.
When ayahuasca is used in a brew along with DMT then the dosage used is 50 to 100 grams or 100 to 150 grams in the lower and higher dosage ranges respectively.
Banisteriopsis caapi is usually consumed before the consumption of psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms. There is a general belief that this combination generally intensifies the effect of mushroom. For such purposes, the dose of ayahuasca powder used is 25 grams.
In Quechuan, the meaning of the word ayahuasca means “vine of the soul”. This herb is frequently used during religious practices or healing ceremonies by the shamans of indigenous tribes of west Amazon. Banisteriopsis caapi is basically a hallucinogen. In addition, it also acts as a purgative and can therefore cleanse the body of the parasites and aids in the functioning of digestive tract.
