The most effective parts of Geranium maculatum are its roots and whole plant. There is high quantity of tannins in entire plant of Geranium. Its root consists of higher concentration (10% to 20%) of tannins. Tannins have an astringent effect on mucosal tissue. This effect decrease secretions, dehydrates the tissue and forms a protective layer of constricted cells.
Geranium has been assessed for antimicrobial activity. But it does not have in vitro activity against Vibrio cholera.
