Its root consists of higher concentration (10% to 20%) of tannins. Tannins have an astringent effect on mucosal tissue. This effect decrease secretions, dehydrates the tissue and forms a protective layer of constricted cells. Geranium has been assessed for antimicrobial activity. But it does not have in vitro activity against Vibrio cholera.
