The most effective parts of Hoodia gordonii are the roots and stems. Hoodia is a luscious plant that grows in the desert of Kalahari. Historical evidences suggest that the San Bushmen used to eat hoodia to remove their hunger during long hunts.
Certain constituent in hoodia extract is thought to be the cause of appetite suppressant properties of hoodia powder. This constituent is called P57. This constituent may also act on the brain to encourage satiety sensations. However, its detailed mechanism is not known.
Clinical experiments suggest that overweight men who used P57 had significantly lower calorie intake as compared to placebo group. However, more confirmations are required to determine hoodia effectiveness for its actions.
