How Effective Is Maqui?

Maqui is considered a super food with antioxidant properties.

How Maqui Works?

Berries and leaves are the applicable parts of maqui. Maqui berry is very rich in antioxidants, such as phenolic antioxidants. The most of the antioxidant potential of maqui berry comes from anthocyanin-rich aqueous fraction of the juice. About 100 grams of fresh maqui berry contain 138 mg of anthocyanins in it. The dry preparations, like the maqui berry powder, contain almost 212 mg anthocyanin per 100 grams. The concentration of anthocyanin in maqui berry is comparable to Calfate (Berberis microphylia), another berry of South American origin. Delphindin 3-sambubioside-5-glucoside represents almost 34% of the total anthyocyanin content of maqui. In addition to maqui berry, the maqui leaves are also very rich in several phytochemicals like triterpenes, flavonoids, coumarins, indole alkaloids, delfidine, petunidine, cianidine glucosides and malvidine. Due to its antioxidant effects, researchers have shown much interest in using different preparations of maqui, like maqui juice or maqui berry powder, for the treatment of different cardiovascular diseases. The results of lab studies (in vitro studies) have shown that use of maqui berry juice can significantly reduce the oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL). Moreover, it can decrease the intracellular (within the cell) damage done by the free radicals (oxidative stress) in a dose dependant manner. Carbohydrate metabolism is another important target for the polyphenols coming from maqui berry powder. Results of in vitro studies have shown that poplyphenols of maqui berry can cause non-competitive inhibition of alpha glucosidase, an enzyme which is responsible for the conversion of carbohydrates into monosaccharides.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Maqui?

There is no known adverse reaction of maqui berry. However, it must be noted that none of the preparations of maqui, like maqui berry powder, has been studied thoroughly in clinical studies.

How Maqui Interacts With Other Herbs and Supplements?

Following is how maqui berry interacts with different herbs and supplements: Hypoglycemia Causing Herbs and Supplements - Results of preliminary clinical trials have shown that maqui berry powder can cause the inhibition of alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme responsible for converting carbohydrates into monosaccharides. Therefore, theoretically speaking, use of maqui berry powder can cause lowering of blood glucose (hypoglycemia). This effect of maqui berry might get added up when it is used in conjunction with other hypoglycemia causing herbs and supplements. That’s why the concomitant use of maqui berry powder and hypoglycemia causing herbs and supplements should be closely monitored. Some of the hypoglycemia causing herbs and supplements include prickly pear cactus, alpha-lipoic acid, bitter melon, Panax ginseng, American ginseng, gymnema, banaba, chromium and others.

How Maqui Interacts With Drugs?

Following is how maqui berry interacts with other drugs: Antidiabetic Drugs - This interaction is of moderate intensity but caution should be observed. As mentioned before, use of maqui berry powder can cause the inhibition of alpha-glucosidase in vitro. Therefore, the hypoglycemic potential of maqui gets accentuated with used in combination with antidiabetic drugs, which are also meant to decrease the level of blood glucose. That’s why this combination should be closely monitored for any possible side effects. Some antidiabetic drugs include rosiglitazone (Avandia), glimepiride (Amaryl), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), glyburide (Diabeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase) and others.

How Maqui Interacts With Foods?

Little is known about the interaction of maqui berry with other foods. More research is needed in this area.

How Maqui Interacts With Lab Tests?

Till now there is no known interaction of maqui berry powder with lab results. Intense research should be carried out to unveil interactions of this nature.

How Maqui Interacts With Diseases and Conditions?

Maqui berry interacts with following diseases or conditions: Diabetes - Use of maqui berry powder can lower the level of blood glucose. Therefore, the patients with diabetes should use this powder with caution as it can dangerously decline their level of blood glucose. Careful monitoring should be done if diabetic patients are using maqui berry powder. This hypoglycemic effect of maqui berry powder is highly exacerbated with the use of antidiabetic drugs. Diabetic patients should consult with their physicians before using any preparation of maqui and readjustment of antidiabetic drugs might be needed.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Maqui?

There is no specific dose for maqui berry powder. However, do consult your health care provider before using any preparation of maqui berry in any dose.
