Why Do People Use Magnolia?

The oral preparations of Magnolia officinalis (Magnolia), like magnolia powder, are used for constipation, digestive disorders, to promote sweating and inflammation. Magnolia is also used for obesity, weight loss, stress, anxiety, asthma, fever, depression, stroke and headache. Magnolia flower bud is orally consumed for runny nose, nasal congestion, facial dark spots, sinusitis, common cold, headache for allergic rhinitis. Topically - Flower bud of magnolia is used for toothaches issues. In Skin Care Products - Flower bud extract of magnolia is utilized topically as a skin whitener and to counteract or lessen irritant effects of chemicals.

How Magnolia Works?

The most effective part of Magnolia officinalis are the flower bud and its bark. There are some active constituent of magnolia bark such as dihydroxydihdromagnolol, magnolol, dihydrohonokiol and honokiol. Magnolol appears to have antiplatelet, central nervous depressant, smooth muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory effects. Conversion of cortisol to cortisone may also be adversely effected by interference of magnolia because of its ability to cause blocking of hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. It enhances the production of corticosterone, which is a glucocorticoid similar to cortisol. This might explain consumption of magnolia powder for asthma. Magnolol may also reduce the production of cholesterol. Clinical researches recommend that magnolol may have anti-leukemic reactions. Dihydroxydihydromagnolol and Magnolol appears to have antidepressant effects. Dihydrohonokiol and Honokiol appears to have anxiolytic activities in animal model likely by interacting with gamma-aminobutyric acid-A receptors. Dihydrohonokiol doesn't appear to be responsible for CNS depression, motor dysfunction, physical dependence or amnesia at doses that produce an anxiolytic impacts. Excessive dosage of magnolia bark appears to have CNS depressant effects. Honokiol also appears to inhibit catecholamine secretion. Magnolia flower bud appears to have hypotensive, uterine stimulating, skeletal muscle contracting and antifungal effects. Its magnone constituents may also have platelet-activating factor antagonist activity which may explain its use in rhinitis and nasal congestion.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Magnolia?

Generally Magnolia officinalis has no major side effects. According to clinical trials, after consuming a combination of products containing magnolia extracts along phellodendron, one patient reported shaking hands, thyroid dysfunction, heartburn, sexual dysfunction and perilabial numbness. Another patient reported headache and fatigue. However, it is still unknown if these side effects are related to magnolia or some other factor. The consumption of magnolia may lead to central nervous system depressant effects if taken in high doses.
