How Hops Works?

The most effective part of Humulus lupulus include female, dried flowering part (strobile). Hops consists of a number of active flavonoids that include isoprenylated flavanone isoxanthohumol, isoprenylated chalcone xanthohumol and other flavonoids for example, rutin, 8- quercetin, prenylnaringenin (8-PN) and astragalin. The xanthohumol constituent exists in a range of 0.1%-1% in lupulin, also known as hops resin. Xanthohumol may have a few pharmacological impacts including potential anticancer effects. According to clinical experiments, it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory impacts as well. Some studies also suggest that xanthohumol and hops constituents are useful for prostate cancer. In vitro examinations recommend that a derivative of xanthohumol can affect malignant prostate growth cells and apoptosis in prostate hyperplasia. These constituents appear to increase the expression pro-apoptotic proteins p53 and Bax. The constituents also appear to lessen the NF-kappaB activation. In animal models of obesity and diabetes, xanthohumol enhances glucose and lipid metabolism and activates the nuclear receptor farnesoid X receptor (FXR). The hops isoxanthohumol and flavonoids 8-PN are thought to have mild estrogenic reactions. The 8-PN flavonoid is accounted for similar estrogen-binding limit as the isoflavone genistein, which is exist in soy. The 8-PN flavonoid ties to both alpha and beta estrogen receptors, yet with a higher affinity for the beta-estrogen receptor. Hops powder also appears to reduce the level of luteinizing hormone in mice that have their ovaries removed. A few hops flavonoids repress aromatase in vitro. The strongest aromatase inhibitor is 8-PN, followed by xanthohumol and isoxanthohumol individually. This recommends that these mixes may have some anti-estrogenic effects as well, in addition estrogenic action. Prenylated derivatives of 1-acylphloroglucinol including isohumulones, humulone, lupulone and others are responsible of the bitter flavor of Humulus lupulus. Clinical experiments suggest hops powder may have anti-proliferative properties and potential chemo-protective effects against ovarian cancer and breast cancer.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Hops?

Possible allergic side effects caused by topical usage of hops include contact dermatitis.
