Why Do People Use Linden?

The oral preparations of Tilia europaea (linden), like linden powder, are used for nasal congestion, colds, palpitations, throat irritation, headaches, hypertension, nervous tension, sinus headache, insomnia, incontinence, migraine headache, hysteria, hemorrhage, fever and arteriosclerotic hypertension. Linden powder can also be used as a diuretic, diaphoretic, as an expectorant for coughs and antispasmodic. Linden sapwood can be also used orally for cellulitis, for gallbladder disease and liver disease. Charcoal of linden is utilized orally for intestinal dysfunctions. Topically - Linden can also be applied on the skin for the treatment of itchy skin and lower leg abscesses (ulcus cruris).

How Linden Works?

The most effective parts of Tilia europaea are the flower, dried leaves and wood (sapwood). Charcoal from the linden tree is also utilized in various ways. Linden has diaphoretic, antispasmodic, sedative, diuretic, antifungal and mild astringent properties. The antispasmodic activities of linden powder are due to its flavonoid constituents and p-coumaric acid, as shown by in vitro studies. Diaphoretic reactions may be because of p-coumaric acid, kaempferol and quercetin constituents. The volatile oils of linden include citronellal, limonene, citral, eugenol, citronellol. These oils may have antispasmodic and sedative effects. A diuretic effect caused by the consumption of linden is likely because of irritant action of terpenoid on the kidneys.

Orally - Regular usage of linden tea is thought to be linked with cardiac disorders, but this appears to happen only when linden is used on regular basis. Topically - Linden dried flower can cause contact urticaria.

Lithium - Interaction rating between linden and lithium is moderate, so be careful about this mixture. Linden is thought to have diuretic effects. Therefore, because of these potential diuretic effects linden may increase the lithium level and lead to decreased excretion of lithium. In such case, lithium dosage should be reduced.

Cardiovascular Disease - Daily usage of linden tea may lead to cardiac damage so those who are suffering from any heart disease should be careful about taking linden preparations.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Linden?

ORAL There is no typical dosage of linden. However, people generally take 1-2 cups of the tea on daily basis. Linden tea is made by steeping 2 grams of linden into 150 mL boiling water. As a linden tincture, 2-4 mL of the tincture (with ratio of 1:5 in 45% concentrated alcohol) and 1-2 mL of the water extract (with ratio of 1:1 in 25% concentrated alcohol) has also been consumed.
