It consist of triterpenoids including acetyloleanolic acid, oleanolic acid (ligustrin), glycosides (including oleuropein, ligustroside), ursolic acid, mannitol, thioketones, fatty oil mainly linolenic, linoleic, a volatile oil consisting primarily of esters of palmitic and oleic acids, hydrocarbons, and alcohols. Ligustrum has been clinically evaluated in China for treating leukopenia, despite the fact that clinical trials have not shown any benefit of privet in the treatment of leukopenia. Privet powder may also have antitumor and immunomodulatory effects. The results obtained from clinical trials suggest that fruit of privet may hinder renal cell carcinoma development, which is perhaps due to the increase in the activity of macrophages and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Extract of privet restrains mutagenicity in bacteria, decreases tumor-induced macrophage suppression and improves T-cell function in cancer tissue.
