How Lovage Works?

The most effective parts of Levisticum officinale are the roots and rhizome. There is 0.2% to 2% volatile oil in lovage. Its basic constituents are lactone derivatives called phthalides. Of these, ligustilide has antispasmodic (6, 8, 11), sedative and aquaretic activities in experimental animals. Aquaretics may become a reason for increase in urine volume, but not electrolyte excretion. It can also have different actions such as antimicrobial and cholinergic activity, increased gastrointestinal blood flow and also increase in uterine tone. The lovage fragrance and vicious taste may be responsible for increase in saliva and gastric juices production. The furanocoumarin constituents may also lead to phototoxic activities, which may further lead to photosensitivity dermatitis.

The long term usage of Levisticum officinale may result in an enhanced risks of phototoxic reactions such as photosensitivity dermatitis. Don’t face the rays of sunlight when applied on skin because it may lead to lethal effects.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Lovage?

ORAL Typically people use one cup of tea two to three times on daily basis. Such tea is made by steeping 1.5-3 grams of the dried root in 150 mL hot boiling water for 10-15 minutes and then straining it. Lovage should only be consumed within the range of 4 to 8 grams of the dried root every day. Ample water usage becomes important when it is utilized as an irrigation therapy. In order to cure stomach disorders, dried lovage should be orally taken as one cup of tea taken 30 minutes before meals.
