Rehmannia root has immunomodulatory effects. Different constituents seem to have immunosuppressive reaction such as acetoside, jionosides A1 and B1, cistanosides A and F, isoacteoside, purpureaside C and echinacoside. A specific extract of steamed root also inhibits discharge of tumor putrefaction element alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 (IL-1) in vitro, recommending possible antiinflammatory effects. According to studies conducted in animal models, particular extract of steamed root also appears to lessen histamine levels.
According to clinical studies, rehmannia is effective for osteoporosis. In animal models, extract of rehmannia root can enhance the production of osteoblastic bone building and reduce markers of osteoclastic activity.
Rehmannia glutinosa is thought to have hypoglycemic impacts because of root manninotriose and oligosaccharides stachyose. Animal models of diabetes recommend that rehmannia root oligosaccharide maybe responsible for decrease in blood glucose. These oligosaccharides may lessen glucose-6-phosphatase activity and enhance hepatic glycogen content.
