Why Do People Use Sorrel?

The oral preparations of Rumex acetosa (Sorrel), like sorrel powder, are used for the treatment of chronic and acute inflammation of the respiratory tract and nasal passages and as an adjunct to antibacterial therapy. Other application of sorrel are to stimulate secretions, as a diuretic and to treat cancer. Mixture of sorrel and cowslip flower, gentian root, verbena and European elder flower sorrel is used orally for treating sinusitis and maintaining healthy sinuses.

Is It Safe To Use?

Possibly Safe - Sorrel is considered safe to use when mixed with foods items. It is also safe when used orally in a particular combination product containing gentian root, sorrel, verbena, European elder flower and cowslip flower (SinuComp, Sinupret). Possibly Unsafe - Excessive amount of sorrel powder is thought to have adverse effects. There is one case report where a 53 year old died after orally using 500 grams of sorrel in soup. Possibly Unsafe for Children - There are oxalic acid in sorrel that may cause a number of adverse effects for children when used orally. There is also another case reported about four-year old child who died after orally using rhubarb leaves, which is a rich source of oxalic acid. To rate the safety of sorrel used in medicinal amounts, there is scarce and unreliable information available. Avoid During Breast Feeding Pregnancy - About the safety of sorrel powder during breastfeeding and pregnancy, particularly in medicinal amount, there is inadequate and unreliable information available. So, health advisors do not recommend it for such ladies.

How Effective Is Sorrel?

Sorrel powder may be effective in following condition/diseases: Sinusitis - Oral consumption of sorrel powder in a particular multi ingredient product, which contains European elder flower, gentian root, cowslip flower (SinuComp, Sinupret) and verbena may be effective in chronic and acute sinusitis. Clinical researches have used Sinupret. However, about the effectiveness of sorrel for other use there is less and unreliable information available.

How Sorrel Works?

The most effective parts of Rumex acetosa are the all aerial parts. Sorrel consists of a significant amount of tannins ranging from 7% to 15%, which apply an astringent activities on the mucosal tissues. This activity may lead to reducing internal secretions, dehydrating the tissue and turning the external cells into a protective layer. Those plants that contain at least 10% tannins may cause kidney damage, gastrointestinal disturbances and necrotic conditions of the liver. According to some recent clinical studies, tannins may cause cancer and other information shows they may counteract it. Consumption on regular basis of herbs with high amount of tannin may result in nasal and esophageal diseases. Initial studies suggest that a polysaccharide constituent of sorrel may have antitumor effects. Sorrel leaves consist of 0.3% oxalate. Upon the absorption of oxalic acid it results in insoluble calcium oxalate, which may precipitate in the kidneys, heart, blood vessels, liver and lungs by reacting with calcium. This may also result in hypocalcemia.

What Are The Side Effects /Adverse Reactions of Sorrel?

There are some side effect caused by the oral consumption of sorrel, when used in combination with other herbs, such as allergic skin reactions and gastrointestinal adverse effects. Theoretically, excessive amount of sorrel may cause kidney stones because of its oxalic acid content.

How Sorrel Interacts With Other Herbs and Supplements?

Calcium - Concurrent use may reduce the absorption rate of minerals. Sorrel consists of oxalate that can decrease mineral absorption and also bind multivalent metal ions in the gastrointestinal tract. Iron - Oral consumption of sorrel may reduce the rate of mineral absorption. Sorrel consists of oxalate that can decrease mineral absorption and bind multivalent metal ions in the gastrointestinal tract. Zinc Combination of sorrel powder with zinc may reduce the absorption rate of minerals. Sorrel consists of oxalate, which can decrease mineral absorption and bind multivalent metal ions in the gastrointestinal tract.

How Sorrel Interacts With Drugs?

There is no known interaction between Rumex acetosa and various drugs items.

How Sorrel Interacts With Foods?

Kidney Disease - Excessive dosage of sorrel powder may increase the potential risks of oxalate kidney stones. So such individuals should use sorrel after proper recommendation or should be avoided individuals that have a history of kidney stones.

What Should Be the Dose/Administration of Sorrel?

ORAL For chronic or acute sinusitis multi ingredient product (SinuComp Phytopharmica) containing sorrel 36 mg mixed in 12 mg of gentian root and 36 mg each of verbena, European elder flower and cowslip flower should be orally taken three times every day.

Comments

Sorrel is an active ingredient in the herbal treatment of cancer. Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is also known as Guinea sorrel and Jamaica sorrel. So don’t mix them with sorrel.
